WHY INTRINSIC MOTIVATION IS IMPORTANT AND HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
Intrinsic motivation is important for several reasons. It plays a fundamental role in shaping behavior, fostering well-being, and promoting long-term success.
When I think of external motivation versus intrinsic motivation, I always think of the student who works to get a lollipop at the end of the session. What will happen when the student switches classes? Or when he becomes too old to work for lollipops? He will continue to look for an external reward in everything he does.
Where we see intrinsic motivation
Sustainability:
Intrinsic motivation tends to be more sustainable over the long term compared to extrinsic motivation (motivation driven by external rewards or punishments). When individuals are internally motivated, they are more likely to engage in activities for the inherent enjoyment or satisfaction, leading to greater persistence and commitment.
Autonomy and Independence:
Intrinsic motivation is closely linked to a sense of autonomy and independence. When individuals are motivated by their own interests and values, they experience a greater sense of control over their actions and decisions, which contributes to overall well-being.
Increased Creativity and Problem-Solving:
Intrinsic motivation is associated with increased creativity and problem-solving abilities. When individuals are motivated by personal interest or enjoyment, they are more likely to approach challenges with curiosity and a willingness to explore different solutions.
Higher Quality of Work:
Intrinsic motivation is often linked to higher levels of engagement and the production of higher-quality work. When individuals are motivated by a genuine interest in what they are doing, the outcomes tend to be more meaningful and fulfilling.
Personal Growth and Mastery:
Intrinsic motivation fosters a focus on personal growth and mastery. When individuals engage in activities because they find them personally rewarding, they are more likely to seek opportunities for learning and improvement.
Positive Emotions and Well-Being:
Intrinsic motivation is associated with positive emotions and overall psychological well-being. Activities that align with one’s values and interests contribute to a sense of purpose and fulfillment, leading to greater life satisfaction.
Resilience in the Face of Challenges:
Intrinsic motivation can contribute to resilience when facing challenges. Individuals who are intrinsically motivated are more likely to persevere through difficulties because their motivation comes from within, rather than relying solely on external factors.
Enjoyment of the Process:
Intrinsic motivation emphasizes the enjoyment of the process rather than solely focusing on the end result. This enjoyment of the journey contributes to a more positive and fulfilling experience.
Adaptability:
Intrinsic motivation promotes adaptability. Individuals who are internally motivated are more open to exploring new ideas, taking on challenges, and adapting to changing circumstances because their motivation is tied to a sense of personal meaning.
Encourages Lifelong Learning:
Intrinsic motivation fosters a love of learning. When individuals are motivated by their inherent interest in a subject or activity, they are more likely to engage in continuous learning throughout their lives.

Intrinsic Motivation in My Games
I am consistently helping students understand why we target components of language, fluency, or articulation. This will assist them in applying what we learn outside of the speech room. Here are games where I emphasize what we are targeting, along with additional targets.
Strategies to help with a student's intrinsic motivation
